Gareth really seems happy, and proud that his brother has produced a brand new baby boy. I haven’t seen Gareth this happy and excited since Pope John Paul died, and then they had to vote for his successor. Gareth looked at the smoke from that chimney at the Vatican, for days, with such relish, I’m sure in very much the same way his whole family was looking up the birth canal of his sister-in-law yesterday. I sent a congratulatory sms to Gareth’s mother on the occasion. I really had to make a special effort not to alienate his family with Jewish phrases like, “mazeltov”, and “nachas”. I don’t like to enforce my culture onto others, it’s a bit arrogant. It’s also a special day today, for the Cliffs, as Gareth’s sister is going through an induction into the legal fraternity, at the Pretoria High Court. Gareth tried to explain to me that his sister is becoming an advocate, and tried to go into what that all means. The difference between lawyers, advocates, and attorneys has been explained to me so many times, I still never remember those details. It’s like understanding how your medical aid works, nobody really knows.
Justin Bieber took over from AMCU as the lead story this morning, what a nice change. Bieber had to get arrested to make our lead. Drunken driving is the main charge. Mabale commented that this is “kind of like a rights of passage” for a young artist. Bieber is following in the footsteps of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and Gareth even added Elizabeth Taylor to that list. Taylor was also a child-star, married eight times to seven different men. Gareth was asking, what advise would you give Justin Bieber? I don’t think anybody can give Justin Bieber any advice. If Bieber’s mother, and manager can’t control him, there’s no getting through to him. I predict that Bieber will be dead before the end of the year. It’ll be a drug overdose, or a car accident.
Steve Hofmyer got his timing right. Steve was sentenced to a R10 000 fine for drunken driving in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates Court. Gareth pointed out that Steve pleaded guilty, and was remorseful. This is when I got myself into trouble, tripping over my tongue, and sounding like I’ve just had a stroke. Gareth was full of admiration for Steven, because he didn’t fight the case, he “took it like a man”, and faced the consequences. All I was trying to point out, was that, it’s easy to plead guilty to a minor offence, like drunken driving. If Steve was up for murder, like Oscar Pistorius, he would be fighting the case, so Steve is not a hero. As a write this, I’ve just come to the realization that I’m making no sense whatsoever, and I feel a bit embarrassed. I had a suspicion that I made no sense this morning. Now it is confirmed. I’m taking the shame.
